She was born in Macedonia

・

in 1910.

・

Her parents were simple, religious people

― Roman Catholics

・

― and their family life was happy.

・

She was twelve

・

when she first felt the wish

・

to give her life to helping the poor.

・

Catholic missionaries returning from India

・

spoke of the great need there.

As a result,

・

when she was eighteen,

・

she decided to leave home

・

to join an order of teaching nuns.

・

She was sent to India

・

to teach at St. Mary's High School in Kolkata.

・

She worked there peacefully

・

for almost twenty years.

One day in 1946,

・

when she was traveling on a train,

・

she heard a clear call from God.

・

She was told

・

to give up everything and follow Him

・

to the poor living in the streets.

・

She set out alone,

・

in a white sari made of cheap cotton cloth

・

with a blue edge and a cross on the shoulder.

・

In the streets

・

she found

・

that many people were sick and dying.

・

Some starving children were even eating garbage.

・

She wondered what she should do.

・

First, she learned nursing skills

・

so that she could enter the homes of the very poor.

・

Then, she opened a little school

・

and taught children how to read and write

・

and keep themselves clean.

・

Soon some of the girls she had taught

・

came to help her,

・

so the mission began to grow.

In Kolkata

・

crowded hospitals often refused

・

to take in dying people.

・

They were so near to death

・

that they could not possibly be cured.

・

One day

・

Mother Teresa found a woman

・

lying on the pavement,

・

half eaten alive

・

by rats and insects.

・

The hospital could do nothing for her,

・

but Mother Teresa did not give in.

・

She refused to move

・

until the hospital finally took in the woman.

・

This was the first woman

・

Mother Teresa saved from the street.

・

On the same day

・

she found other people

・

dying in the streets.

・

A city health officer

・

let her have a Hindu temple

・

which was no longer in use.

・

Within twenty-four hours

・

she and her helpers had cleaned it

・

コルカタでは

Not all of the dying

actually die.

・

About half of them live

・

and are cared for,

・

or may even get well enough

・

to find jobs and earn their own living.

Those who die,

・

die peacefully

・

without fear.

To Mother Teresa,

・

"Death is going home.

・

Death is nothing but going home to God.

・

If this was properly explained to the dying,

・

then there would be no fear."

・

Mother Teresa's work came to include the care

・

of unwanted children,

・

of lepers,

・

of anyone in need.

・

With the girls who had joined her,

・

in 1950 she formed a new order of nuns

・

― The Missionaries of Charity.

・

Before long,

・

centers and houses were opened

・

all over the world,

Mother Teresa was given the Nobel Peace Prize

for all that she had done

for the poorest of the poor.

She went to Oslo

・

and received the honor

・

and the money that went with it.

When she received the prize,

she said,

・

with simple dignity,

・

"I do not need the money myself.

・

It belongs to the poor.

・

I accept it only for them."

・

Mother Teresa often said,

・

"We are not trying to change

・

the structure of society.

・

Our job is just to tell the world

・

that God loves the world,

・

that He loves each one of us.

・

Very often we receive much more from the poor

・

than we give to them.

・

What we do

・

is still only a drop in the ocean,

・

but if we did not do this work

・

1979年

Mother Teresa was called by God once again.

・

She died in Kolkata

・

at the age of 87.

・

At her death,

・

countless people all over the world

・

shed tears.

Those tears might symbolize

・

every effort she made

・

during her lifetime

・

for the poorest of the poor.
